Between the Appointment and the Crisis: Technology, families, and the space beyond your training

Between the Appointment and the Crisis: Technology, families, and the space beyond your training

Nicole Drapeau Gillen

Nicole Drapeau Gillen is a mother, an advocate, an author and a volunteer who recognized that caregivers like herself often find themselves thrust into this challenging, complex and stressful situation with little clear guidance on how to help a loved one with a serious mental illness. In this talk, she will explore evidence-based digital tools for SMI, critically evaluate the benefits and risks of AI in psychiatric care, and discuss health equity gaps in digital mental health access. Recently, Nicole published "Connected Care: A Practical Guide to Technology for Serious Mental Illness" a book that shows the landscape of available technology, which has never been more promising, or more overwhelming. New apps, AI tools, telepsychiatry platforms, and brain-based treatments are entering the market faster than anyone can track. But without a reliable guide to what actually works, the people who stand to benefit most are often the least equipped to navigate it.

Nicole previously wrote Schizophrenia & Related Disorders: A Handbook for Caregivers, published at the end of 2023. The book is geared to help caregivers with the issues they will need to face. It is a “kitchen table” reference book that addresses all stages of helping someone with an SMI like schizophrenia. This book was endorsed by Dr. E. Fuller Torrey, among others as a “must read for caregivers of people with a severe mental illness.”
